This comment isn’t really directed at who I’m reblogging it from. But why do black women tend to react negatively when white women have braids?

just a hairstyle? while this white woman can walk around with “just a hairstyle” they don’t have to worry about being called unprofessional, ghetto, hood rat, etc. leave it to this dude not to understand and think we just throwing shade, mmhmm.

^THIS. WOC dancers at my club have allegedly been given $ to get their hair re-done after getting box braids because it “looks too ghetto”. Fuck that shit. 

for real, strip clubs stay policing shit like this and it’s a fucking strip club. imagine how it must be in so many other settings. but best believe a white person would get all kinds of praise and be allowed to make money with that shit.

I’ve worked in the corporate world for the last 15+ years. Black women cannot wear braids, Afros, twists, locs, or other “ethnic” styles in many industries without it adversely affecting their career & that’s just in terms of access to the kinds of assignments that put them in line for a promotion. In some industries natural styles are a one way ticket to getting fired. Black women have had to sue for the right to wear their the way it grows out of their head, never mind being able to wear braids at work. Bo Derek slapped some cornrows in her head & America acted like it was a new invention worthy of applause. We do it, and we get called into an office to discuss presenting a “professional” appearance. I don’t rightly give a fuck what Becky Sue puts on her head, I give a fuck that in 10 years Becky Sue will be sitting in an HR office telling a black WOC that her hair isn’t work appropriate because in Becky Sue’s head this hairstyle is something for vacations & to play dress up in for a while until she moves on to appropriate something else because it amuses her.

It feels weird to comment on this, since I’m a white girl who doesn’t have to deal with the hair issue.

But this bothers me so much. The “natural hair is unprofessional” part, especially.
It may be a traditionally white person thing to say, but what’s almost worse is seeing WOC take that attitude with *each other.* I see it in my workplace every day. (not in the “you should know, your hairstyle might hinder you professionally, which is unfair but a reality” way, but straight up “you need to do something about that hair” - this, to a girl with the second most beautiful afro I’ve ever seen…)

And it’s not my place to tell people what to do/not do with their hair (if you want to drown it in chemicals to get a certain look, by all means), but seriously, if a WOC wants to own her natural hair, don’t try to talk her out of it. You wouldn’t like it if white people did that shit to you, so why do it to each other?
